Composite laying simulation is now a reality in NCSIMUL Machine 9.1

THE MAIN NEW FEATURE OF NCSIMUL MACHINE 9.1

Simulation of COMPOSITE MATERIAL LAYING

The result of several years’ collaboration with major aerospace customers, NCSIMUL Machine 9.1 today makes it possible to replicate material laying processes executed by Numerical Control machines.

Just as it does in conventional machining, NCSIMUL Machine 9.1 decodes all types of NC programs, representing the complete machine environment in 3D to identify and analyze programming errors and collisions. The “Composite” option of this version also enables a dynamic representation of fiber ribbon laying, taking into consideration the 3D form of the carbon fiber. The positioning of each fiber in the ribbon is managed independently.

NCSIMUL Machine 9.1 alerts users to issues that are specific to the way Composites are processed and that are liable to occur on real-world machines: these include fiber steering angle errors generating possible deviation, twisting of taut fiber between the head and the position on the spool, fiber tension issues including speed disparities between fibers or sudden changes of direction creating backwards laying.

Analysis functions can be used to communicate information to the Process Planning department and the Design Office before going live. This includes the length of the laid material, layer thickness measurement, fiber ribbon intersection angle, aperture radius, etc. The section plane function gives insights into layering or possible holes in the material. At any time, you can export the fiber path or the end result of the material laying generated on the tooling in CAD format.

NCSIMUL Machine 9.1 takes into consideration the shape of the initial tooling and the tension applied to the fibers. SPRING Technologies has developed very fast new algorithms enabling fiber laying simulation with performances of 300 m/min. on a conventional CAD workstation.

All the functions dedicated to Composite technology are grouped together in a new Ribbon (Office mode) for a fast effective learning curve.

CUST 2013: more than 100 attendees gathered around “Shop floor 4.0”

SPRING Technologies announces NCSIMUL DNC 8.20: connecting and monitoring your CNC machines is now so easy

SPRING Technologies, vendor of solutions that enhance the productivity of NC machines, is launching the new version 8.20 of its NCSIMUL DNC solution, supporting CNC program life cycle management and real-time monitoring of machine status in the workshop.

1. ENHANCED USER EXPERIENCE for greater productivity and faster execution

For customized reporting, using the quick and simple customization functions, you can create all kinds of reports to match specific corporate needs. The key performance indicators, defined in-house for each user profile (workshop manager, production manager, site manager, etc.), are easy to access and facilitate instant communication of key metrics to the whole workshop community.

In this way, you can select the periodicity for monitoring indicators, and the different types of indicators (opening time, required time, running time, net time, effective time, etc.) for each monitored machine. The data can then be consolidated in a PDF file or displayed in real time by the NCSIMUL DNC application from any supervisory workstation, offering global control of the workshop and contributing to the process of continuous improvement of the use of production resources.

Document traceability is available with one-click access. Access to histories and version traceability is more intuitive and directly available from the ISO program version management window.

Finally, NCSIMUL DNC, implemented on Toughpad (Panasonic’s rugged tablet), makes total mobility in the workshop a reality for operators and managers, via an interface and specific functions designed especially for use on a touch pad. The interface has been streamlined, the main buttons resized, enhancing access to functions and cutting out input errors, notably when qualifying machine status.

“After synchronizing real machining with machining simulation and making instruction sheets accessible from a Toughpad — a capability that we demonstrated at EMO — we are progressing the execution of our vision: the NCEXPERIENCE®, by taking the leading functions of NCSIMUL DNC and real-time machine status monitoring on to a mobile platform. 2. MORE AUTOMATION to boost productivity

When a program is imported, machine recognition and selection is fully automatic. This means that when a user wants to import a program associated with a machine, NCSIMUL DNC now suggests this machine by default.

The list of available programs is automatically updated, enabling operators to save invaluable seconds when a program is unloaded.

Finally, automatic comparison of machining files has been enhanced and is based on a CRC code (calculated according to file content). When an operator has to manually unload a program, the new calculation method considerably improves the reliability of machining file comparison during the unloading phase and instantly tells the user whether the unloaded program is identical to the previously loaded program, yielding an instant time-saving for operators.


3. EASIER INSTALLATION for faster deployment

Connection to the databases has been simplified, as has deployment via the install wizard. This enables a simple and rapid deployment of NCSIMUL DNC, configuration and testing of the connection to the database. There is no need for a specialist to install this new version of NCSIMUL DNC 8.20.

A library of standard report formats is supplied by default, with an editor that can be used to create customized reports. These templates automatically integrate a range of standard productivity metrics including the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), the Overall Rate of Return (ORR), and the Economic Rate of Return (EIRR), enabling rapid generation of all reports required to monitor machine-tool production activity.


4. TIGHTER INTEGRATION for a leaner digital process

NCSIMUL DNC now comes natively integrated with standard market databases, such as Oracle, Access, SQL Server and Postgre sql. Whichever database you are using, native integration significantly reduces data access time and fits seamlessly into any policy to make data accessible for all external processing (reports, ERP interfaces, etc.).

NCSIMUL DNC is interfaced with Mazatrol (the proprietary language used on Mazak machines), enabling Mazatrol files to be imported from the Isotop software.

Boeing 787-9 project: at Messier-Bugatti-Dowty Suzhou, NCSIMUL Machine in collaboration with CATIA, optimized greatly the machining process efficiency of complex titanium parts


14 months since the start of the project, the Boing 787-9 has finally achieved a great millstone with optimizing the manufacturing of extremely complex titanium parts for the Boing 787-9 project. The parts where designed by Messier – Bugatti – Dowty (MBDT) and manufactured in Safran’s Suzhou factory.

CATIA was used for the design and CNC programming while NCSIMUL Machine was used for CNC machining program verification and optimization as well as technical documents edition to support CNC operators on their daily tasks. Now the machining and setup time are greatly reduced and the overall production process efficiency on the shop floor, dramatically improved.

The amazing technical team at SAFRAN Suzhou factory worked extremely hard to deliver the parts on time. Many more challenges await the team in 2013 but with great team effort and the right technologies anything is possible.

North American users will also be invited to attend a WYSIWIC® - What You See Is What You Cut – showcase. This is the latest NC breakthrough demonstrated at the mid-September EMO 2013 trade-show. This mobile cutting-edge technology, implemented on a fully-rugged professional tablet (Panasonic’s toughpad), provides real-time synchronization between the CNC simulation (G-Code based), the work instruction sheet - both provided by NCSIMUL Machine - and the NC program, running on a CNC machine (FANUC Robodrill 5-Axis machine).


NC operators can therefore automatically access work instruction sheets in the machining environment while the real machine operations are being displayed, eliminating the need to download documentation as a separate task and helping NC operators to gain confidence as they work.

ZODIAC AEROSPACE chooses NCSIMUL Machine and NCSIMUL Player version 9 from SPRING Technologies

SPRING Technologies, vendor of solutions that enhance the productivity of NC machines, announces the signature of a new contract with ZODIAC SEATS France to implement NCSIMUL Machine 9 for machining simulation and NCSIMUL Player 9 to review and facilitate the sharing of simulations with all stakeholders in the NC process. The ZODIAC AEROSPACE reference site for machining, located at Issoudun in central France, was looking for a means to secure its NC machine tools, optimize tool paths and, ultimately, reduce machining preparation times and the risks of collisions.

A WATCHWORD: OPTIMIZATION

Specialized in the field of aeronautics since 1944, ZODIAC SEATS FRANCE, formerly SICMA AERO SEATS, is now a member of the ZODIAC AEROSPACE group, and a world leader in the manufacturing of aircraft seats.

The challenge facing the Issoudun site in 2013 was to optimize its tool paths and increase their reliability, while continuing to support its existing CAM solution: TopSolid’Cam. The task was made tougher as Zodiac Seats France was introducing new NC machines, notably from the maker MICHEL PIOCH and 5-axis MAZAK Vari-axis machines that would need to be secured.

Zodiac Seats France started to investigate the market in 2012 and, visiting the Industry show, found out about SPRING Technologies and its NCSIMUL SOLUTIONS range. “We were really impressed by the ergonomics, user-friendliness and intuitive qualities of NCSIMUL Machine and its viewer, NCSIMUL Player,” explains Frédéric Millet, head of programming at Zodiac Seats France. “We did some severe testing and SPRING’s machining simulation solution really delivered what we were looking for in both functional and organizational terms. The clincher was the strong partnership between SPRING and the NC machine maker MICHEL PIOCH, as well as the support from the project team at SPRING.”

SPRING Technologies puts its faith in hyper-connection


At EMO 2013, SPRING Technologies will be showcasing its NCSIMUL Solutions implementation on a fully-rugged Panasonic touch tablet, connected to a 5-axis Fanuc Robodrill. NCSIMUL Player 9, the new version of the NCSIMUL Machine 9 machining software, is now implemented on Panasonic’s Toughpad FZ-G1: it enables simulations to be monitored on screen and provides access to all the relevant technical documentation in a real machining context. Operators in the workshop environment can now access a realistic 3D simulation of their machine tools, tool libraries and their documentation (instruction sheets, etc.), on a fully stand-alone rugged and ergonomic touch tablet. The tablet-based player offers a totally original function via a TCP/IP connection and a fully touch-driven interaction: on-screen monitoring of machine operation. When a machine stops, the instruction sheet is displayed automatically on the tablet. This is no longer just NC simulation but a digital representation of the actual operation. Today, an operator can view the simulation on one side of the screen and the documentation on the other, and have it all at his fingertips, at any on-site location.


In this way, the package brings operators and any other stakeholders in the machining process a completely new interactive, collaborative and mobile experience of the NC program, linked to the machining simulation.

The digital factory is now a viable application


SPRING Technologies has been talking it up for so long that we have been entitled to wonder whether it would ever actually happen. However, the digital factory is now firmly within reach, crowning the joint efforts of SPRING, the software developer, Panasonic and Fanuc. Tomorrow’s factory operative / NC operators may yet end up looking like he walked straight out of “Minority Report".

A Fanuc Series 31i-Model B5 machine tool interacting with a Panasonic FZ-G1 touch tablet via a SPRING Technologies NC software solution: the trade show at Le Bourget provided the backdrop against which SPRING offered stunned audiences a foretaste of the potent combination.

Imagine the scenario: a single operator, tablet in hand, capable of controlling several machine-tools at once, fully aware of when, where and how to act… with nothing more than the full power of applied IT. An application that is on the verge of becoming a reality: operators on very large machines will soon see their daily lives made so much easier by the potential of this exciting new concept

“Real machining and simulation in synergy”

The trio’s technical achievement (SPRING, FANUC and Panasonic) is summed up by the slogan "What you see is what you cut"! The concept displays on a rugged tablet screen a true-to-life digital view of what is happening on the machine as the CNC program is being effectively executed in real time. The synergy between the on-screen simulation and the machining reality is such that both start and stop at the same time just as the machine starts and stops, whether the decisions are made automatically or manually, from the CNC or from the tablet. To put the icing on the cake, all data generated by the ongoing machining operation is automatically recorded in a single file. This is why the three partner companies have successfully managed to make their carefully selected products work together. Panasonic brings the FZ-G1 touch tablet, complete with state-of-the-art functionality: fully-rugged, running Windows 8 Pro, it has a sunlight-viewable IPS screen developed by Panasonic, with ten-point multi-touch technology, a digitizer and configurable ports. From Fanuc comes the CNC Series 31i-Model B5 with nanometer-precise resolution and high-speed machining, 100Mbit Ethernet communication and malware protection. Finally, SPRING Technologies supplies two modules, NC Simul Player 9 and NC Doc, which respectively deliver realistic 3D simulation, synchronized with the CNC machine, and a technical data editing and publishing capability.


The trio’s next goal is for the system to control a complete robotic cell. All three partners currently have the necessary technology in production. The first live demo on a working machine is scheduled for EMO: an "NCExperience" you will not want to miss!

SIDEL, the world leader in PET packaging solutions achieves unparalleled productivity gain with NCSIMUL Machine

The company secures its production resources by simulating NC programs upstream 
and saves 15,000 production hours per year

The leading global provider of PET liquid packaging solutions, SIDEL, offers its customers a complete range, from packaging design through line engineering, including packaging machinery and associated services.

With 31 subsidiaries, 26 plants worldwide, and a workforce of around 5,300, SIDEL offers its customers high added-value solutions based on its business-specific knowhow, its teams and geographic proximity. SIDEL’s corporate philosophy is embodied in key principles: improve production, boost productivity, and cut costs, whether for end-users or in-house.

The production site at Octeville Normandy, is one of the group’s seven mold-making facilities. It produces blow molds made up of seven main parts: centering ring; mold body; stud; mold base; wear ring; wear washer; arch support.

CHALLENGES

SIDEL has state-of-the-art production resources to match its market leadership. For example, its Octeville site, with 10 programmers, has 63 CNC machine tools – (DMG, MCM, etc.), 2,000 milling and turning tools and two CAM solutions for these disciplines.

The challenge was to eliminate problems with production tools by validating the programs upstream (ISO code, measuring probe program, XYZ axis travel, comparison between the machined model and the original CAD design) and postprocessor modifications, while integrating these technologies into the existing environment. To do this, SIDEL turned to SPRING Technologies and the NCSIMUL Machine simulation solution that it has been using for 13 years.

A PARTNERSHIP FOR 13 YEARS

To do this, SIDEL trusted SPRING Technologies and its NCSIMUL machine solution for the machining simulation for 13 years.

Today SIDEL Group uses 12 NCSIMUL Machine workstations at its site in Normandy. The time savings are tangible, quantifiable and have proved to be substantial: some 15,000 hours per year!

The keys to this success have been the reliability of the computation and simulations performed by NCSIMUL Machine; tests on the first machined parts; and better management of the huge number of production tools used. GOING FORWARD

SIDEL plans to deploy NCSIMUL Machine in all the group’s mold-making plants worldwide. It will also deploy OPTITOOL, the SPRING Technologies solution for analysis and cutting conditions optimization at the Octeville site and in China.

NCEXPERIENCE becomes connected and mobile at Paris Air Show 2013

Delivering its NCEXPERIENCE roadmap, SPRING Technologies exhibited that ultra-mobility is now ready for NC operators and programmers on the shop floor



SPRING Technologies, vendor of solutions that boost productivity on NC machines, demonstrated at the Paris Air show, June 19th, a major breakthrough to serve the shop floor for enhanced production process integration and improved productivity.

As a first Worldwide preview, with US and French press and key customers and prospects in attendance, the SPRING Technologies Corporate team ran a live demo showcasing the connection between work instruction sheets and a machine’s CNC control. The demonstration presented the company’s NCSIMUL Player 9 running on the latest Panasonic Toughpad tablet PC (FZ-G1) and its connection with the FANUC 31i B5 CNC machine tool control.

This breakthrough technology brings mobility and ease of use, thanks to touch screen capabilities, and it provides an instant access to the work instruction sheet, in context of the machining process.

For instance, when a part machining process requires a machine to stop, allowing the NC operator to take measurements or to verify the machining quality, etc., the correct work instruction automatically appears on the tablet PC.

Therefore, machine operators know exactly the tasks to be performed and do not spend any more time searching for process sheets among tons of pdf.


Breakthrough features

Till now, NCSIMUL users have had to download their documentation as a separate operation.

Now they can have their simulation on one part of the screen and the documentation conveniently displayed alongside.

The tablet implementation of NCSIMUL Player also offers a breakthrough feature: the ability to monitor machine operation on the screen via a TCP/IP connection with 100% touch interaction. We are no longer talking about just NC simulation, but about a digital representation of real-world operation.

"Our customers in aeronautics machine titanium parts that require frequent breaks in machining”, explains Philippe Solignac, Director of Corporate Marketing. “By instantly displaying the work instructions and explaining the task that has to be done at each break point, operators save valuable time. This will enable us to help airplane manufacturers increase their shop floor productivity and meet their production planes delivery while ensuring high-quality production standards.”

SPRING Technologies has signed an ISV (Independent Software Vendor) partnership contract with Panasonic under which it will integrate sales of its Toughpad FZ-G1 into its offering, coupled with its software solutions.
